ResponseInterfaceprototype passed to the constructor; any PSR-7 implementation works)
- codesaur/http-message (a convenient source for the
Design principles
Clean separation of concerns
Application does not contain route registration logic - that is solely Router's responsibility. Application is a middleware pipeline coordinator + multi-router delegator + mount-aware URL coordinator.
- Router: route registration, matching
- Application: middleware pipeline + multi-router coordination + mount
- Controller: business logic
- ExceptionHandler: error handling
No magic API
No $app->GET(...) shortcut. All routes must be registered on explicit Router instances. This is IDE-friendly, type-safe, and gives new developers a clear mental model.
Routers sit at one level - first registered wins
No Router is special or ranked above the others - they all sit at the same level. But at match time the earliest-registered Router has the advantage: when several Routers have a matching path, the first one added (in use() order) wins (first-added-wins). To intentionally override a previously registered route, use the explicit override() lane.
Strengths
1. Full PSR-15 compliance
RequestHandlerInterfacefully implementedMiddlewareInterfacesupported- Onion-model middleware chain correctly implemented
- Meets all PSR-15 requirements
2. Multi-router delegation
- Combine multiple Router instances in one Application
- First-added-wins ordering (use() registration order) + explicit override() lane
- Suitable for module-based architecture (ApiRouter, AdminRouter, etc.)
3. Mount feature
- Mount Application at a URL prefix
- Routers are prefix-naive (reusable)
- Mount prefix automatically added to generate/pattern/getRoutes
- Boundary protection (/dashboard != /dashboardx)
4. Per-route middleware
- MiddlewareInterface instance
- Closure
- class-string (lazy instantiation)
- Strict validation - fails fast on invalid types
5. 'application' attribute = Application
$request->getAttribute('application') returns the Application instance. Controllers can do mount-aware URL generation.
6. Comprehensive PHPDoc
- All classes, methods, properties have PHPDoc
- Clear parameter, return type, exception declarations
- @example annotations with many examples
- Mongolian descriptions
7. Exception Handler
- ExceptionHandlerInterface implemented
- Automatic HTTP status code setting
- Writes to error_log
- Generates HTML error page
- Stack trace in development mode
8. Test coverage
- Total tests: 96
- Assertions: 149
- Categories:
- Unit: Application, Controller, ExceptionHandler
- Integration: all components together
- Edge case: mount, multi-router, boundary
- Performance
9. Documentation
- README.md (Mongolian + English)
- API.md detailed reference
- CHANGELOG.md
- Example files
10. CI/CD Pipeline
- GitHub Actions workflow
- Tested on PHP 8.2, 8.3, 8.4
- Tested on Ubuntu, Windows, macOS
- Codecov coverage report
Areas for improvement
1. Custom Exception classes
Current state:
- Routes not found throw
\Error - Controller class missing throws
\Error - Per-route middleware invalid throws
\InvalidArgumentException
Suggestion:
- Custom exception classes (RouteNotFoundException, ControllerNotFoundException, etc.)
2. Response helpers
Current state:
- Controller/Closure returning non-ResponseInterface falls back to a clone of the constructor-provided response prototype
Suggestion:
- Response builder helpers (JSON, redirect, etc.)
3. Route caching
Current state:
- Routes are matched at runtime
Suggestion:
- Add route caching for production environments
Code quality assessment
Excellent
- PSR-15 Compliance: 5/5
- Separation of Concerns: 5/5
- Code Organization: 5/5
- Documentation: 5/5
- Testing: 5/5 (96 tests)
- Middleware System: 5/5
- Multi-router architecture: 5/5
- Mount feature: 5/5
Good
- Error Handling: 4/5 (no custom exception classes)
- Performance: 4/5 (no route caching)
- Response Handling: 4/5 (no response builder helper)
Use cases
Framework-agnostic
Package is framework-agnostic and works with:
- Laravel
- Symfony
- Slim
- codesaur
- All other PHP frameworks
Recommended use cases
- HTTP Application core
- REST API development
- Web application development
- Microservice architecture
- Sub-application mounting (admin panel, API versioning)
- Multi-module application
- One Router per module
- Application aggregates all
- Reusable Router (mount at different prefixes)
- Middleware development
- Authentication, Authorization
- Logging, CORS, Rate limiting
- Per-route or global
- Controller/action style
- Controller-based routing
- Action-based routing
- Route parameters (typed)

Comparison
Compared to other application frameworks:
| Feature | codesaur/http-application | Slim Framework | Laminas Mezzio |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSR-15 Compliance | Full | Full | Full |
| PSR-7 Compliance | Full | Full | Full |
| Middleware System | Onion model | Onion model | Onion model |
| Multi-router | Yes (built-in) | Via group() | Via pipe |
| Mount feature | Yes (built-in) | setBasePath() | Path-conditional pipe |
| Router Integration | RouterInterface (pluggable) | Built-in | Pluggable |
| Magic API | None (clean) | $app->get() | Pipe-only |
| Controller Base | Abstract class | None | Interface |
| Exception Handler | Built-in | Manual | Manual |
| Dependencies | 3 packages | Many | Many |
| Size | Lightweight | Medium | Large |
Router Integration: the Application depends only on
RouterInterface(provided by codesaur/router as the default). Any router can be plugged in by implementingRouterInterfacedirectly or wrapping a third-party router in an adapter - the Application is not tied to a single router implementation.
Security
Done well
- Input Validation
- Route parameter type validation (int, uint, float)
- Controller class existence check
- Method existence check
- Per-route middleware type validation
- Path Normalization
- Correct URL encoding/decoding
- Path traversal protection
- Empty path handling
- Mount boundary protection (/dashboard != /dashboardx)
- Exception Handling
- Exceptions correctly thrown
- Correct error code setting
- Error log
Notes
- Route Pattern Injection
- Route patterns only come from developers
- If from user input, additional validation needed
- Controller Injection
- Controller class names only come from developers
- If from user input, whitelist needed
Performance
Done well
- Middleware Chain - Onion model, queue management
- Route Matching - codesaur/router fast pattern matching
- Multi-router - first-added-wins for fast break (override lane checked first)
- Mount strip - O(1) prefix strip, str_starts_with
- Memory Usage - small objects
Opportunities
- Route Caching - cache routes in production
- Middleware Caching - cache the queue
PSR standards
Implemented
- PSR-4 Autoloading - Composer autoload correctly configured
- PSR-12 Coding Style - indentation, brace position correct
- PSR-15 HTTP Server Request Handlers - full
- PSR-7 HTTP Message - fully supported
